ye shall appoint.As the {goel,} or kinsman, had a right to avenge the death of his relation, by slaying the murderer wherever he found him, the appointment of these cities was a humane institution for the protection of the involuntary homicide; for they were designed only for the protection of such.

 Six of their cities were to be refuges for those who had unintentionally committed murder; a precious type of God’s dealings with Israel, who, in their ignorance, killed the Christ. In this sense, God judges them to be innocent. (Numbers 34-36 by J.N. Darby)
