This metal is mentioned as early as Genesis 4:2222And Zillah, she also bare Tubal-cain, an instructor of every artificer in brass and iron: and the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah. (Genesis 4:22), when it was used by artificers; and Job speaks of it as dug out of the earth (Job 28:22Iron is taken out of the earth, and brass is molten out of the stone. (Job 28:2)). It was in use in Palestine before the Israelites entered, for they found that the Canaanites had chariots of iron (Josh. 17:16,1816And the children of Joseph said, The hill is not enough for us: and all the Canaanites that dwell in the land of the valley have chariots of iron, both they who are of Beth-shean and her towns, and they who are of the valley of Jezreel. (Joshua 17:16)
