The porch is the
passage
-way from the street to the court. See diagram on page 198. It is
sometimes
arched, and its floor usually inclines from the direction of the street. A
door
opens from it into the court; but this door is so arranged that it is not directly opposite to the
gate
which opens to the street. Thus, though both should be open at the same
time
, no one, in passing through the street, would be able to look into the court. This was the place to which
Peter
retreated when he was accused of having been with
Jesus
. The porch is also mentioned in
Judges 3:23
