²⁵But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof:
²⁶I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh;
²⁷When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you.
²⁸Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me:
²⁹For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the Lord:
³⁰They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof.
³¹Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices. (Prov. 1:24‑31)

³⁵And the battle increased that day: and the king was stayed up in his chariot against the Syrians, and died at even: and the blood ran out of the wound into the midst of the chariot.
³⁶And there went a proclamation throughout the host about the going down of the sun, saying, Every man to his city, and every man to his own country.
³⁷So the king died, and was brought to Samaria; and they buried the king in Samaria. (1 Kings 22:20‑23,28,34‑37)

• Hardening the neck is a figure taken from the manner in which a refractory bullock turns away from and avoids the yoke. In this way, men, in their obstinacy, persistently refuse to heed reproof, and set their wills stubbornly against what would be for their own best interests; thus insuring their destruction.
