I agree in adopting "wash their robes" on the authority of a few good MSS. against all other known manuscripts. It is an extraordinary variant where "that wash their robes," seems to be the true text, but got changed into "that do his commandments" in the common texts of Erasmus and the Complutensian, Stephens, Beza, and Elzevir. The critical text gives prominence to the washing by grace, which supposes not more the shedding of Christ’s blood than the guilt that demanded it if expiation were to be righteously.
