In the days of Samuel it is said “a prophet was beforetime called a seer” (
1 Sam. 9:9
9
(Beforetime in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, thus he spake, Come, and let us go to the seer: for he that is now called a Prophet was beforetime called a Seer.) (1 Samuel 9:9)
). They were so-called apparently because they were given of God to
fore-see
events or to see visions. This is confirmed by
Isaiah 30:10
10
Which say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits: (Isaiah 30:10)
, where rebellious Israel, in effect, said to the seers, “
See not
.” They did not want to hear what God had to say to them. Ezekiel also says, “Woe unto the foolish prophets, that follow their own spirit and have
seen nothing
!” (
1 Sam. 13:3
3
And Jonathan smote the garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba, and the Philistines heard of it. And Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, Let the Hebrews hear. (1 Samuel 13:3)
).
