(plain). (1) The plain skirting the Mediterranean coast from Judah to Caesarea. It is an extension of the “shefelah” or lowlands of Judah, and was renowned for its fertility. Called Saron in Acts 9:35³⁵And all that dwelt at Lydda and Saron saw him, and turned to the Lord. (Acts 9:35). First mentioned as Lasharon (Josh. 12:18¹⁸The king of Aphek, one; the king of Lasharon, one; (Joshua 12:18)). David’s flocks fed there (1 Chron. 27:29²⁹And over the herds that fed in Sharon was Shitrai the Sharonite: and over the herds that were in the valleys was Shaphat the son of Adlai: (1 Chronicles 27:29)). Celebrated (Song of Sol. 2:1¹I am the rose of Sharon, and the lily of the valleys. (Song of Solomon 2:1); Isa. 35:2; 65:10²It shall blossom abundantly, and rejoice even with joy and singing: the glory of Lebanon shall be given unto it, the excellency of Carmel and Sharon, they shall see the glory of the Lord, and the excellency of our God. (Isaiah 35:2)

1. A very fertile plain, near the Mediterranean, extending from near Joppa northward to Mount Carmel. Its excellency is spoken of, and the bride in Song of Solomon 2:1¹I am the rose of Sharon, and the lily of the valleys. (Song of Solomon 2:1) calls herself a “rose of Sharon.” It formed part of the lots of Ephraim and of Manasseh (1 Chron. 27:29²⁹And over the herds that fed in Sharon was Shitrai the Sharonite: and over the herds that were in the valleys was Shaphat the son of Adlai: (1 Chronicles 27:29); Isa. 33:9⁹The earth mourneth and languisheth: Lebanon is ashamed and hewn down: Sharon is like a wilderness; and Bashan and Carmel shake off their fruits.
