Dictionary of Biblical Words:

—This is the highest pair of man. It was directly imparted by the breath of God (Gen, 2.). Like the soul, it is immortal. In Scripture it is said to be sorrowful (1 Sam. 1:15¹⁵And Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before the Lord. (1 Samuel 1:15)), contrite (Psa. 34:18¹⁸The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. (Psalm 34:18)) broken (Ps. 51:17), patient (Eccles. 7:8⁸Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit. (Ecclesiastes 7:8)), haughty (Prov. 16:18¹⁸Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall. (Proverbs 16:18)), &c., &c. It is the same word that is used for the spirit of God (see SOUL).

(breath). The breath (2 Thess. 2:8⁸And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: (2 Thessalonians 2:8)).
