Though all the beasts that live and feed
Upon a thousand hills should bleed —
Though all their blood should flow,
The sacrifice would be in vain,
The stain of sin would still remain:
“Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us. For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh. How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance. For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth. Whereupon neither the first testament was dedicated without blood. For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and of goats, with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book, and all the people. Saying, This is the blood of the testament which God hath enjoined unto you. Moreover he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry. And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission. It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.” (Hebrews 9:12-23)
"A better sacrifice" than these
It needs, the conscience to appease
No blood hath virtue to atone
For man’s offense, but His alone
Whose title is "The Word."
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” (John 1:1)
His who could say, Himself the Son,
"My Father and Myself are one,"
Who made the world around;
His, who Jehovah’s Fellow stood,
And claimed equality with God,
Whose glory knows no bounds.
“I and my Father are one.” (John 10:30)
“All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.” (John 1:3)
Jesus the Christ, on earth His name,
He came — in love to sinners came —
And bowed His head and died;
A full atonement now is made,
The ransom, by His death, is paid,
“And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:21)
“Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.” (Matthew 1:23)
“When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.” (John 19:30)
“And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.” (Romans 5:11)
“Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.” (1 Timothy 2:6)
That sinners might draw near to Him
God planned this great, this gracious scheme,
And found the ransom too:
Let all His saints their voices raise,
And sing the great Redeemer’s praise
“Then he is gracious unto him, and saith, Deliver him from going down to the pit: I have found a ransom.” (Job 33:24)
