A term often used in the Old Testament where a city is mentioned and “its villages,” but at times nothing more is meant than its “suburbs,” not in the sense of separate villages. The two principal words are bath, “daughter” ({vi 4366;4373}Num. 21:25,32); and chatser, “hamlet, encampment” etc. ({vi 6318;6322}Josh. 18:24,28). In the New Testament it is κώμη “village” (Matt. 9:35).
