A Finished Work

“The cup which My Father hath given Me,
shall I not drink it”
(John 18:11)?

Jesus asked Peter this question. Peter had tried to stop the band of soldiers from arresting the Lord Jesus, but the Lord had been given the work of the cross to do and do it He must. Early in His pathway He had stated, “For I came down from heaven, not to do Mine own will, but the will of Him that sent Me” (John 6:38).

He was truly “obedient unto death, even the death of the cross” (Philippians 2:8). Nothing could stop the work on Calvary, and Peter had to put his sword away and watch in helpless disbelief as his Lord was taken to trial, and eventually to Calvary’s cross.

Today we look back to a work that has been completed to the eternal glory and satisfaction of God. The Lord Himself could affirm in His High Priestly Prayer, “I have glorified Thee on the earth: I have finished the work which Thou gavest Me to do” (John 17:4). Never will God require another sacrifice for sin, “For by one offering He hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified” (Hebrews 10:14).
