Dear Young Christian:

“While I was musing the fire burned” (Psalm 143:5).

I love to sit and stare into an open fire while meditating on the goodness of the Lord, and all His wonderful workings in me, for me, and around me. I find something relaxing, and certainly heart warming, during those rare opportunities.

Sadly, in today’s fast-paced world, we seem to have little time for musings and meditation. In the whirl of life we forget or neglect to take those solitary moments that are so needful for our spiritual development. The paradox is that if we would spend more time in quiet contemplation before the Lord, it would result in more effective service for Him.

Perhaps you won’t have opportunity to sit alone by an open fire this week, but don’t waste the opportunities to have some quiet time alone with the Lord wherever and whenever it might be. Take the time and you will be able to say, like the writer of old, “My meditation of Him shall be sweet: I will be glad in the Lord” (Psalm 104:34).

Your Christian Friend,

 Jim Hyland
