Exercise

I have just returned from a morning walk. As I get a little older and start to feel my age, I am trying to get a little more exercise. I have an app on my iPhone, and I try to get in at least 10,000 steps a day. Now, as I sit down to write today’s calendar page, there are two verses that come to mind. Two verses written to a young man named Timothy.

“Exercise thyself rather unto godliness. For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come” (1 Timothy 4:7-8).

Physical exercise is good and necessary for our natural bodies. But, more importantly, spiritual exercise is essential if we are going to be healthy, happy Christians, and “be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might” (Ephesians 6:10).

Both physical and spiritual exercise take self-discipline, time, and energy. If you are going to read your Bible, spend time in prayer, and walk with the Lord, you will have to put forth some effort and spiritual energy as well. However, it will be well worth it, and you will have your “senses exercised to discern both good and evil” (Hebrews 5:14).
