“As in water face answereth to face, so the heart of man to man” (Proverbs 27:19).

At first glance this verse might seem a bit confusing, but it is really quite simple. Before the days of good mirrors, people often polished copper to make a mirror for themselves, and sometimes simply looked into still water. What they saw was of course the image of their own faces.

It is the same with our human hearts; they are all the same. Your heart, my heart, and the hearts of everyone else, are all naturally the same. When we look at someone else who is doing something bad, we are seeing only the reflection of our own natural hearts. They are wicked hearts, ready to do evil, and we must remember that. Referring to yesterday’s verses, we may be surprised that the Jews would choose a man like Barabbas to be released from prison, and would condemn the Lord Jesus. How could they do that? But unless God had touched our hearts, we would have done the same thing. God tells us in the Bible that “the carnal mind is enmity [hatred] against God” (Romans 8:7). Without a work of God to give us new life, we would all reject the Lord Jesus. How thankful we should be that we have been brought to Christ, to have new life in Him, and to know and love Him! But once again we ask the question, Have you accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as your Savior?
