“Many will say to Me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Thy name? And in Thy name have cast out devils? And in Thy name done many wonderful works? And then I will profess unto them, I never knew you” (Matthew 7:22-23).
Here the Lord shows us that in a coming day—the day of judgment, there will be those who will address the Lord Jesus as Lord, and who will remind Him that they have done wonderful works in His name. They will even have used His name to cast out demons. Yet He will have to say to them, “I never knew you: depart from Me, ye that work iniquity.”
They may outwardly have done some good things, but to do them without really believing on the Lord Jesus is very serious. God calls those good things “iniquity,” for the word “iniquity” really means having our own way, and wanting our own will. Many people today want to have a relationship with God, but they want it on their own terms. God cannot allow this. To have a proper relationship with God means that we must come to Him as lost sinners, and accept Christ as our Savior.
