“And when the ship was caught, and could not bear up into the wind, we let her drive” (Acts 27:15).
There are times in sailing when a headwind is so strong that it is almost impossible to sail against it. The sailors simply have to let the wind carry the ship wherever it blows. But many times, if the wind is not too strong, it is possible to sail against the wind by tacking. This means zigzagging, and setting the sails in such a way as to catch some of the wind, and thus manage to make some headway. It takes much longer, but you go in the right direction.
In our Christian lives, we sometimes have what is called a “tail wind”—the wind at our backs. How good that feels! At other times we are compelled to sail against the wind. But unlike natural sailing, we never have to give in and go in the wrong direction. The Lord is in control of all the circumstances in our lives, and He can direct the various forces in this world to enable us to go where He wants us to go.
