“Then said Jesus unto His disciples, If any man will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me” (Matthew 16:24).
As I am writing this in May, 2024, there are a number of students at various universities in the world who are setting encampments of tents on university property, trying to force the university administration to support the Palestinians in Gaza. One girl said that she had given up her course at the university, and given up going home for visits, because she felt so strongly about the situation. She is willing to put her whole life “on hold,” if only something can be done for the Palestinians.
According to our verse today, the Lord expects us to deny ourselves, and to be ready to give up anything that hinders our faithfulness to Him. No, the Lord does not expect us to live in tents, and not to do our daily work. But He wants us to be ready to live our lives for Him, as we saw yesterday. Worldly people are willing to do it, sometimes for a very questionable reason. Are we willing to give up things for the Lord?
