“Christ also suffered for us…who did no sin…who, when He was reviled, reviled not again; when He suffered, He threatened not; but committed Himself to Him that judgeth righteously” (1 Peter 2:21-23).
When we think of who the Lord Jesus was—the Son of God, and the Creator of the universe, it overwhelms our hearts to think of what He suffered in this world. First of all, He suffered all the insults and physical abuse that man could heap upon Him. It is important for us to realize that all this was to show us how much He loved us; His sufferings from man did not put away our sins. It was only His sufferings in the three hours of darkness that put away our sins.
But in those sufferings from man, our Lord Jesus showed us how we should react to suffering for the name of Christ. The Lord Jesus had absolute power to deal with those who abused Him, but He did not use it. Rather He committed Himself to God His Father, and that is what we should do. If we are persecuted for Christ’s sake, the Lord takes note of it. We can leave the judgment of it all with Him.
