What sweet relief to the suffering one who has ben seeking for satisfaction or rest in his own holiness to find, after years of unsuccessful struggle, that the very thing he longs for is treasured up in Christ for him, and is his own this moment, even a complete sanctification to be enjoyed by faith.

Young Christians Calendar

“Then said the Jews unto Him [the Lord Jesus], Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast Thou seen Abraham? Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am. Then took they up stones to cast at Him” (John 8:57-59).

Yesterday we noticed that the Lord Jesus took the title I AM, just as Jehovah had done when He spoke to Moses out of the burning bush. Jesus was the Jehovah of the Old Testament.

Here, in our verses today, He uses that title again with reference to Abraham. By faith Abraham had looked on to the time when Christ would come, and then the Jews questioned how someone who was not even fifty years old could have seen Abraham.

The Lord’s answer is instructive for us. He did not say, “Before Abraham was, I was.” No, as the ever-existing One, He said, “Before Abraham was, I am.” If someone like Noah or Methuselah had been speaking, they could have said, “Before Abraham was, I was,” for they were men like Abraham. But the Lord Jesus, who existed from eternity, did not move in time before He came into this world. Living and moving in eternity, He could say, “I am.”

Growing in Grace
“He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings” (Psalm 40:2).
“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path” (Psalm 119:105).
When we accept the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior, He does two things for us. First of all, He brings us out of the horrible pit in which we are as sinners. Being a sinner is like being in quicksand; the more you struggle against the sucking power of the thick mud, the more you are dragged down. I have never been caught in quicksand, but I have read about those who have been trapped in it. Unless someone comes and helps you, it is impossible to get out by yourself. You just sink more and more until you are sucked under the mud. But the Lord has lifted us out of this “miry clay,” and set our feet on a rock. That rock is the Lord Jesus Himself.
But this is not all. The Lord does not save us, and then leave us to find our own way as Christians. No, His Word provides a lamp for our feet, and a light for our path. The lamp for our feet shows us the next step. It does not show us the whole pathway, but only the next step, for that is all we need. As we move along, the lamp shows us a further step, and we have guidance all the way along.
But the light shows us the end of the journey. We do not know everything about the path right now, but we know both the next step, and the end of the path. We know where we are going, for the Lord Jesus has gone ahead, and where He is, there we will be. We can confidently walk the path of faith, for the Lord Jesus has promised to guide us all the way home. We never need to stumble in that path, for we have a perfect lamp by which to be guided.

Thou shalt put the two stones upon the shoulders of the ephod for stones of memorial unto the children of Israel: and Aaron shall bear their names before the Lord. (Exodus 28:12)
Jesus … because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood. Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.1 – Him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory.2
Seeing … that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace.3
The beloved of the Lord shall dwell in safety by him; and the Lord shall cover him all the day long, and he shall dwell between his shoulders.4

Comfort of the Scriptures
“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever” (Psa. 23:6).
“Goodness and mercy shall follow” us always because the Lord Himself is with us, and He tells us to “let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for He hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” Many of us are creatures of moods. Sometimes we feel like the Lord is near; at other times we feel that He is afar off. But our feelings have nothing to do with the facts of God’s Word. “The Lord, He it is that doth go before thee; He will be with thee, He will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed.” These are the words of Him who is called “faithful and true,” for “God, that cannot lie,” has vouchsafed His presence always with His own. “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” To be sure, there are times when we are more than ordinarily conscious of His presence, but that does not make His abiding presence any more certain. It depends, not upon our consciousness of it, but upon His own Word. “Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.” “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God.”
Our Lord never leaves His own;
He stands close by them, always;
Though burdens press and trials come,
He is with us all our days.
