1. A people who once inhabited the villages of Philistia, who were destroyed by the Caphtorims (Deut. 2:23²³And the Avims which dwelt in Hazerim, even unto Azzah, the Caphtorims, which came forth out of Caphtor, destroyed them, and dwelt in their stead.) (Deuteronomy 2:23)); a remnant being left till the days of Joshua (Josh. 13:3³From Sihor, which is before Egypt, even unto the borders of Ekron northward, which is counted to the Canaanite: five lords of the Philistines; the Gazathites, and the Ashdothites, the Eshkalonites, the Gittites, and the Ekronites; also the Avites: (Joshua 13:3)).

2. City belonging to the tribe of Benjamin, not far from Bethel; but the name having the article in the Hebrew may signify a group of villages (Josh. 18:23²³And Avim, and Parah, and Ophrah, (Joshua 18:23)).

3. A people localized in Samaria by the king of Assyria (2 Kings 17:31³¹And the Avites made Nibhaz and Tartak, and the Sepharvites burnt their children in fire to Adrammelech and Anammelech, the gods of Sepharvaim. (2 Kings 17:31)).
