A name common in the priestly family especially of Eleazar.

1. Descendant of Zadok (1 Kings 4:2²And these were the princes which he had; Azariah the son of Zadok the priest, (1 Kings 4:2)).

2. Son of Nathan, over the officers (1 Kings 4:5⁵And Azariah the son of Nathan was over the officers: and Zabud the son of Nathan was principal officer, and the king's friend: (1 Kings 4:5)).

3. Son of Amaziah king of Judah. See UZZIAH.

4. Son of Ethan, descendant of Judah (1 Chron. 2:8⁸And the sons of Ethan; Azariah. (1 Chronicles 2:8)).

5. Son of Jehu (1 Chron. 2:38-39³⁸And Obed begat Jehu, and Jehu begat Azariah, ³⁹And Azariah begat Helez, and Helez begat Eleasah, (1 Chronicles 2:38‑39)).

6. Son of Ahimaaz and grandson of Zadok (1 Chron. 6:9⁹And Ahimaaz begat Azariah, and Azariah begat Johanan, (1 Chronicles 6:9)).

7. Son of Johanan, descendant of Zadok, apparently the first high priest who ministered in Solomon’s temple (1 Chron. 6:10-11¹⁰And Johanan begat Azariah, (he it is that executed the priest's office in the temple that Solomon built in Jerusalem:) ¹¹And Azariah begat Amariah, and Amariah begat Ahitub, (1 Chronicles 6:10‑11)).

22. Son of Maaseiah: he repaired a portion of the wall of Jerusalem (Neh. 3:23-24²³After him repaired Benjamin and Hashub over against their house. After him repaired Azariah the son of Maaseiah the son of Ananiah by his house. ²⁴After him repaired Binnui the son of Henadad another piece, from the house of Azariah unto the turning of the wall, even unto the corner. (Nehemiah 3:23‑24)).

23. One who returned from exile (Neh. 7:7⁷Who came with Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum, Baanah. The number, I say, of the men of the people of Israel was this; (Nehemiah 7:7)): supposed, as in the margin, to be the same as SERAIAH in Ezra 2:2²Which came with Zerubbabel: Jeshua, Nehemiah, Seraiah, Reelaiah, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispar, Bigvai, Rehum, Baanah. The number of the men of the people of Israel: (Ezra 2:2).

24. One who assisted in the reading of the law under Ezra (Neh. 8:7⁷Also Jeshua, and Bani, and Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodijah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, caused the people to understand the law: and the people stood in their place. 26. A prince of Judah who took part in the procession when the wall of Jerusalem was to be purified (Neh. 12:33³³And Azariah, Ezra, and Meshullam, (Nehemiah 12:33)).

Son of Hoshaiah: he charged Jeremiah with prophesying falsely (Jer. 43:2²Then spake Azariah the son of Hoshaiah, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the proud men, saying unto Jeremiah, Thou speakest falsely: the Lord our God hath not sent thee to say, Go not into Egypt to sojourn there: (Jeremiah 43:2)).

One carried away with Daniel to Babylon, probably of the seed royal: his name was changed to ABED-NEGO (See Dan. 1:6-19⁶Now among these were of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: ⁷Unto whom the prince of the eunuchs gave names: for he gave unto Daniel the name of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abed-nego. ⁸But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself. ⁹Now God had brought Daniel into favor and tender love with the prince of the eunuchs. ¹⁰And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who hath appointed your meat and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse liking than the children which are of your sort? then shall ye make me endanger my head to the king. ¹¹Then said Daniel to Melzar, whom the prince of the eunuchs had set over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, ¹²Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink. ¹³Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenance of the children that eat of the portion of the king's meat: and as thou seest, deal with thy servants. ¹⁴So he consented to them in this matter, and proved them ten days. ¹⁵And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat the portion of the king's meat. ¹⁶Thus Melzar took away the portion of their meat, and the wine that they should drink; and gave them pulse. ¹⁷As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams. ¹⁸Now at the end of the days that the king had said he should bring them in, then the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar. ¹⁹And the king communed with them; and among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stood they before the king.
