Then I.Some consider this as the cavil of an infidel objector, equivalent to the Epicurean maxim, {Ede, bibe, lude; post mortem nulla voluptas,} "Eat, drink, and play; there is no pleasure after death."
But it may be regarded as a recommendation of a moderate use of worldly things, with a cheerful and contented mind; which may justly be considered as the greatest advantage which can be made of all below the sun: and amidst all changes, such a frame of mind, if the result of right principles, may and ought to be preserved; and it will be the recompence and solace of all our labours and toils.
Eccl. 2:24• 24There is nothing good for man, but that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God. (Eccl. 2:24)
;
Eccl. 3:12‑13,22• 12I know that there is nothing good for them but to rejoice and to do well in their life;
13yea also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy good in all his labour, it is the gift of God.
22And I have seen that there is nothing better than that man should rejoice in his own works; for that is his portion; for who shall bring him to see what shall be after him?
(Eccl. 3:12‑13,22)
;
Eccl. 5:18• 18Behold what I have seen good and comely: it is to eat and to drink, and to enjoy good in all his labour wherewith man laboureth under the sun, all the days of his life which God hath given him: for that is his portion. (Eccl. 5:18)
;
Eccl. 9:7‑9• 7Go, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart; for God hath already accepted thy works.
8Let thy garments be always white, and let not thy head lack oil.
9Enjoy life with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which he hath given thee under the sun, all the days of thy vanity; for that is thy portion in life, and in thy labour wherein thou art labouring under the sun.
(Eccl. 9:7‑9)
;
1 Tim. 4:3‑4• 3forbidding to marry, bidding to abstain from meats, which God has created for receiving with thanksgiving for them who are faithful and know the truth.
4For every creature of God is good, and nothing is to be rejected, being received with thanksgiving;
(1 Tim. 4:3‑4)
;
1 Tim. 6:17• 17Enjoin on those rich in the present age not to be high-minded, nor to trust on the uncertainty of riches; but in the God who affords us all things richly for our enjoyment; (1 Tim. 6:17)
 What a contradiction to the previous sober conclusion, “It shall be well with them that fear God “! Now, seeing that there is no apparent justice in the allotment of happiness here, and the fear of God is often followed by sorrow, while the lawless as often have the easy lot―looking on this scene, I say, “Eat, drink, and be merry;” get what good you can out of life itself; for all is one inextricable confusion. (Ecclesiastes 8 by F.C. Jennings)

And I commended mirth, because there is nothing better for man under the sun than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry; for that shall abide with him of his labour the days of his life, which God hath given him under the sun.
