That is, there were four years occupied from the recommencement of the building until its completion (chap. 4:24). How many years had passed away since the foundation was laid cannot be exactly ascertained, inasmuch as the length of the reign of the sovereigns between Cyrus and Darius is not given. It could scarcely have been less, and was probably more, than twenty years.
