i.e., Booths.Succoth was on the east of Jordan, between the brook Jabbok and that river, about 40 miles from Jerusalem, and consequently near Penuel; where a city was afterwards built, which Joshua assigned to the tribe of Gad.
Jerome says, that Succoth was in the district of Scythopolis; and the Jews inform us, that the name of Darala was sometime after applied to it.
Jacob settling down in Succoth, and, contrary to the spirit and principles of a pilgrim life, building a house, as if it were his home.  the Succoth of Jacob's dwelling was the place given to the Gadites (Josh. 13:27) and made memorable by the princes who refused bread to Gideon and his three hundred. (Jacob: 13. Succoth and Shechem by W. Kelly)

Meaning booths. Durckhardt identified this Succoth, or Sukkot as he calls it from the Arabic. Dr. Robinson and Van de Velde speak of the western place called Sakut, which ought not to be confounded with the eastern. Jerome (Quaest. in Gen. 33:16“And Esau returned that day on his way to Seir.” (Genesis 33:16)) had long before made the just discrimination. Jacob evasively journeys to Succoth, which should be marked east of the Jordan, though there was a place so named west of that river, as elsewhere too (Ex. 12:37“{i}And the children of Israel journeyed from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand on foot that were men, besides children.{/i}” (Exodus 12:37) Num. 33:5‑6“{i}And the children of Israel removed from Rameses, and encamped in Succoth.{/i} {i}And they removed from Succoth and encamped in Etham, which is at the end of the wilderness.{/i}” (Numbers 33:5‑6)). But the Succoth of Jacob’s dwelling was the place given to the Gadites (Josh. 13:27“{i}and in the valley, Beth-haram, and Beth-Nimrah, and Succoth, and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon the king of Heshbon, the Jordan and its border, as far as the edge of the sea of Chinnereth beyond the Jordan eastward.{/i}” (Joshua 13:27)) and made memorable by the princes who refused bread to Gideon and his three hundred, and were threshed for their baseness with the thorns of the wilderness and briers.
