Dictionary of Biblical Words:

Objects of false worship of whatever kind. They were a perpetual snare to Israel, who especially worshipped Baal or the sun god, and Ashtaroth or the moon, the queen of heaven. We get a most graphic description of an idol in Isa. 44 Idols now are by no mean confined to heathen countries. Men worship (that is, bow down to, and serve), money, power, fame, rank, beauty, &c., &c.

(apparent). An object of worship, other than God (Gen. 31:19); idolatry forbidden ({vi 2055-2056;2510}Ex. 20:3-4; 34:13; {vi 5021-5024;5137-5138}Deut. 4:16-19; 7:25-26); yet existed largely, especially under the judges and later kings (Ex. 32; {vi 6556-6569}Judg. 2:10-23; {vi 9142;9179-9185;9241-9243}1 Kings 11:33; 12:27-33; 14:22-24; {vi 18771-18774}Isa. 57:5-8).
