EXO 19:18

And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the Lord descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly. (Exodus 19:18)

Israel camped at the foot of this mountain while Moses was receiving the law from God. (They actually stayed here for almost a year.) When Moses came down from Sinai with the law written on two slabs of stone, he saw that the children of Israel had turned to idolatry and thus had already broken the first commandment. He threw down and broke the tables of stone and had to return to Sinai to receive the law a second time. When he returned again, the Israelites discovered that the law was exactly as it had been the first time. God’s standards don’t change just because we do.
