Shushan.Shushan, or Susa, was the capital of Susiana, a province of Persia, and the winter residence of the Persian monarchs; situated about 252 miles east of Babylon, and the same distance south-south-east of Ecbatana, in lat. 32 degrees, long. 49 degrees.
The circumference of its walls was about 120 stadia.

The book of Nehemiah is closely tied to the book of Ezra; in fact, the two form a single book in the Hebrew Scriptures. (Nehemiah - Neh. 1:1 by N. Simon)
In comparing the individuals — Ezra and Nehemiah — we find them to be quite different in temperament. Ezra seems more subdued; he was the ready scribe and the priest of God. Ezra was sent to Jerusalem to restore things ecclesiastically....Nehemiah, on the other hand, was a man of action and, it would appear, a natural leader....One should be careful in elevating the one over the other; each walked according to the measure of faith that they had received. Why was it necessary for God to send Nehemiah to Jerusalem when Ezra was already there? Had Ezra failed? No, each had a role that the other could not fulfill. (Nehemiah - Neh. 1:1 by N. Simon)
Scarcely thirteen years had passed since Ezra had gone up to Jerusalem, armed with royal authority and impelled by his godly zeal for the glory of Jehovah in the welfare of His people, "to teach in Israel statutes and judgments." (Exposition on Nehemiah: Nehemiah 1 by E. Dennett)
(Compare Ezra 8:21-23 with Neh. 2:7-9; Ezra 9:3 with Neh. 13:25.) Yet, though Ezra was still at Jerusalem, it was Nehemiah who was sent at this special moment. Happy is it when the servant receives his work from the hands of the Lord, and, discerning when his mission for any particular purpose is ended, can retire. (Exposition on Nehemiah: Nehemiah 1 by E. Dennett)
