And one of the sons of Joiadan, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was son in law to Sanballat the Horonite: therefore I chased him from me.

• {v.28-29} Eliashib himself, as we have seen, was "allied unto Tobiah," so that he and his family were linked up with the two active enemies of Israel. Here then, in the high priest's family, was the fount of corruption from which flowed out the dark and bitter streams of sin through the people. To drive the sinner away was all that Nehemiah himself could accomplish; but he had another resource, of which he availed himself—he committed the matter to God.
