Those whom we would have naturally assumed to be the teachers, especially the priests and Levites, now seek to be instructed. This time we find added the words, “even to gain wisdom as to the words of the law” (Neh. 8:13 JND). Reading for knowledge is a far cry from seeking wisdom. (The Feast of Tabernacles - Neh. 8:13-18 by N. Simon)
It is beautiful to notice this increasing desire for the knowledge of the Word of God—a sure sign that God was working in their hearts, inasmuch as obedience to it is a necessary expression of the divine life. (Exposition on Nehemiah: Nehemiah 8:13-18 by E. Dennett)
