Four officers are going together to get some wounded men in. They hear an eight inch shell coming; they throw themselves on the ground; the shell falls on them, and in a moment three of the four are in eternity. The one whose life is spared is stunned and buried by the shell, and for twelve hours lies unconscious with a broken ear-drum and shell shock. Why was he spared? Only six inches between him and instant death. Surely God has the first claim on a life thus spared. May it prove so for Christ’s sake.
