there are other thrones with elders seated on them — that is, those endowed with wisdom from on high, who entered into the thoughts and counsels of God. They are clothed in white raiment, answering to their priestly, as their crowns do to their kingly, dignity. They are clearly saints and at home in heaven by glory around the great central throne before the world's judgment begins. The number of these is twenty-four, corresponding with the twenty-four courses of priesthood in Israel. (Lectures on Revelation 4 by W. Kelly)

J. N. Darby Translation

+
4
And rounde the throne twenty-four thrones, and on the thrones twenty-four elders sitting, clothed with white garments; and on their heads golden crowns.

JND Translation Notes

+
e
I use "round" for what is connected with anything (not necessarily united to it) as a centre, as the tire of a wheel, but "around" is used for detached objects encircling.

W. Kelly Translation

+
4
And round about the throne were twenty-four thronesa: and upon the twenty-four thrones I saw elders sitting clothed in white garments, and upon their heads golden crowns.

WK Translation Notes

+
a
The Revisers rightly give "thrones" not "seats," as in the KJV.
