The Septuagint has “land-crocodile,” and doubtless one of the large lizard species is meant (Lev. 11:29²⁹These also shall be unclean unto you among the creeping things that creep upon the earth; the weasel, and the mouse, and the tortoise after his kind, (Leviticus 11:29)).

Concise Bible Dictionary:

One of the unclean animals. The Hebrew word is supposed to refer to a lizard, but to what species is not known: perhaps the dhab of the Arabs, a large lizard. The RV has “great lizard.” The tortoise, however, is common in Palestine (Lev. 11:29²⁹These also shall be unclean unto you among the creeping things that creep upon the earth; the weasel, and the mouse, and the tortoise after his kind, (Leviticus 11:29)).
