Asa fears Baasha; since he has given way on one point {the high places were not removed from Israel}, he can no longer esteem the world as a system with which he can make no compromise and from whom he can ask no aid. He is well aware of his lack of strength, as at the time of the Ethiopian's attack, but he no longer has the same assurance that all his strength is in God. (Asa's Decline: 2 Chronicles 16 by H.L. Rossier)
This is diplomacy and, no doubt from the human point of view, good politics, just as maintaining the high places had been. So it has been time and again; one tries to break an alliance and win one of the adversaries to one's own side. When faith has grown weak, it seems easier to depend on man than simply to trust in the One who is our pillar "Boaz." (Asa's Decline: 2 Chronicles 16 by H.L. Rossier)
