Beth-haccerem.Beth-haccerem was a town of Judah, situated on a mountain, between Jerusalem and Tekoa, according to Jerome on Jer. ch. 6.
Dr. Pococke conjectures that the Mountain of the Franks, called also the Mount of Bethulia, from a village of that name near it, west-north-west of Tekoa, is the ancient Beth-haccerem; the position of which seems to agree with the citadel of Herodium, built by Herod, on a moderate-sized hill, sixty furlongs from Jerusalem.
Jer. 6:1• 1O ye children of Benjamin, gather yourselves to flee out of the midst of Jerusalem, and blow the trumpet in Tekoa, and set up a sign of fire in Beth-haccerem: for evil appeareth out of the north, and great destruction. (Jer. 6:1)
• The Dung gate, as the name suggests, would have been the portal for the expulsion of refuse from the city. In the days of Josiah, during a time of revival in Judah, much was found in the city of Jerusalem contrary to the Word of God — groves and altars and vessels made for Baal in the temple. All these were taken outside the city and destroyed, and Jerusalem was cleansed (2 Kings 23:4; 2 Chron. 34:3-5). (“The Gates - Neh. 3:1-32” by N. Simon)
