The third, I conceive, represents by rivers people formed into a separate condition of nationality, like waters flowing in a distinct channel, under special local influence; and by the fountains rather the springs of a nation's prosperity. All the active principles assume the form of death. (Lectures on Revelation 16 by W. Kelly)
Rivers and Fountains of Waters: (See Rev. 8:10). These popular influences became the power of death. (Revelation 16 Symbols by A.H. Burton)

And the third poured out his bowl on the rivers, and on the fountains of waters; and they becamei blood.

JND Translation Notes

i
Or "there was blood." Ginomai. see John 1.17. Strictly "and there was," or "came to be," "blood." But I apprehend "it" (ver. 3) and "they" (ver. 4) are the sense, in spite of accuracy of grammar: blood took place as a consequence in what is spoken of. The sense is more striking as it stands in Greek considered as a vision. What he saw took that character.

W. Kelly Translation
