“Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled [unclean or impure]” (Titus 1:15).

If you are truly saved, you have a new life in Christ that wants to please the Lord. If we allow that new life to display itself in the way we conduct ourselves, our mind will be kept pure. But in our everyday lives we meet unbelievers, and we will often find that they seem to turn everything that is said into something impure. I remember working one summer in a plant that built school buses, and there was one man who worked there who always seemed to find something impure to say in the lunchroom. His mind and conscience were defiled, and it was painful to hear him.

We cannot always stop this kind of talk, but we should avoid it if we can. If we ask the Lord, He will give us something to say that perhaps will reach their conscience, even though it is defiled.
