WK Translation Notes

+
a
The RV gives correctly the future, "Grace shall be with us," etc. For "us" some MSS. read "you" here, followed by the KJV. Undoubtedly "you" is the more usual wish; but this is rather an assurance, and the peculiar form well admits of the apostle’s putting himself with those addressed, as in the preceding verse.
b
No notice is taken by the American correctors of the RV of John’s peculiar phrase para, "on the part of God," not apo, "from God," as in the Pauline Epistles. It is more intimate, as also in verse 4.
c
"The Lord" is doubtful, though strongly supported, as some of the best MSS. and versions do not sanction it. It would be the solitary case, if genuine, of so designating Christ in John’s Epistles; but then it is the solitary case of a full and solemn salutation. Still I cannot but regard it as no less questionable than other assimilations to the style of the apostle Paul.
