 What rock? The confession Peter had made that Jesus was the Son of the living God. On this the Church is built. It is not only that the Father had revealed that, but the Lord adds His revelation also to Peter. For it is not, "I say also," but "I also say." Indeed, that is the true, real force of the verse. My Father hath revealed it, "and I also say unto thee..."

None can deny that the revelation given expressly distinguishes a stone from the rock. And it is inconceivable that any should be unable to mark the difference of ideas so distinct, as it is corrupting the faith to level down the Lord in order to raise Peter to the same height.
