The word aphairē (should take away) in the T. R. is an evidently faulty effort to express the guilt of taking from the words of this inspired book, for which most MSS. have aphelē (take away).

Most MSS. have "the tree" of life, some have "the book" followed by the T. R. The Edd. prefer "the tree." The error goes beyond the form; for, as the Revisers agree with all critics, it is a question of "the tree," not of the "book" of life here, an error due to Latin influence, though even then the form would be incorrect as before.

The Edd. omit "and" before "that are written." Erasmus mistakenly added "and" before the last clause. All these points are rectified in the Revision of 1881.
