Appreciation
“Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped His feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment” (John 12:3).
Don’t you get the impression that Jesus meant a great deal to Mary? Appreciation for Him filled her heart just as the sweet odor filled the house. If you know the Lord personally and have been forgiven of your sins, if this is true, then you know that He has given you very much. Worship is adoration and love you can give back to Him. Mary’s gift was expensive — but He was worth it to her.
Even the criticism of Judas and all the other disciples did not discourage or dissuade Mary. Her heart was full and overflowing, and her one object was the person of Christ.
The Lord valued it, and said, “She hath wrought a good work on Me…She hath done what she could: she is come aforehand to anoint My body to the burying. Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her” (John 12:6,8-9).
