“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour” (1 Peter 5:8).
Have you ever heard a lion roar? Probably not, but I heard one once, in a zoo. Even though I knew that the lion could not harm me, the intensity and loudness of the roar was very frightening. It went on for quite some time, and reminded all who heard it of the power of that lion.
The Lord compares Satan to a lion, who comes at us fiercely, wanting to frighten us. Sometimes Satan attacks us through difficult circumstances in our lives, while at other times he may frighten us with discouragement. When difficulties pile up, and things are not going right in our lives, that is the time that Satan seeks to discourage us. He tells us that the Christian pathway is too difficult, that it is not worthwhile, and that we should rather take part in worldly pleasures than follow the Lord. He is looking for those “whom he may devour.” What are we to do? We will see tomorrow.
