Have you ever wandered through a cemetery and read the inscriptions on the tombstones and grave markers? These are called epitaphs, and are often very interesting. Quite often they were written by the deceased while they were alive, and engraved on their marker after their death at their request, and give the reader real insight into their character. Some indicate that the person was a believer, and is now, “absent from the body, and…present with the Lord” (2 Corinthians 5:8). Others make you wonder. Here is an epitaph with a thought provoking message: My body lies beneath this stone, My spirit has to heaven gone! Weep not for me, I am not dead, But sleep in Jesus Christ instead. And soon I’ll rise, when called away, Upon the resurrection day, With all God’s saints — will you be there, And God’s bright home with Jesus share?
