“And she [Rahab] let them [the two spies] down by a cord through the window: for her house was upon the town wall…And the men said unto her…Behold, when we come into the land, thou shalt bind this line of scarlet thread in the window which thou didst let us down by” (Joshua 2:15,18).
You are probably familiar with the story of Rahab, a young woman who hid the spies when they came into the city of Jericho to search it out. Rahab was not only an immoral woman, but she also told lies about the two spies, and was a traitor to her city. But she had faith in God, and knew that the Lord had given the Israelites the land of Canaan.
When she let the men down through a window in her house, so that they could escape, she evidently used a rope that was scarlet (a deep red) in color. Perhaps it seems strange to us that her rope was this color, for rope made out of hemp is normally a brown color. However, God allowed that rope to be red, for it is a picture of the blood of Christ.
When the Israelites conquered the city of Jericho, anyone who was in Rahab’s house was safe, because of the scarlet line in the window. In the same way we can be safe from the judgment of God, if we are under the shelter of the blood of Christ.
