“And as Jesus passed forth from thence, He saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the receipt of custom: and He saith unto him, Follow me. And he arose, and followed Him” (Matthew 9:9).

Today we are introducing another of the Lord’s twelve disciples. He was a tax collector, and in the Roman Empire, those men were usually rich. Matthew had a good job, but when the Lord Jesus called him to follow Him, Matthew immediately got up and followed the Lord Jesus. We do not hear much about Matthew during the Lord’s time in this world, but afterward, the Lord used Matthew to write the book that bears his name.

Matthew also gives us a good example to follow. He was ready to give up a good job and follow the Lord Jesus. Are we ready to give up the advantages we have in this world, if the Lord calls us to do so? It is not wrong to have a good job, but we should never let something like this interfere with what the Lord wants us to do. Remember that when Matthew followed the Lord Jesus, the Lord used him to write a book of the Bible that we are still enjoying today. That was much better than having a good job as a tax collector!
