“He [Peter] saith unto Him [the Lord Jesus], Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love Thee. He saith unto him, Feed My lambs…Feed My sheep” (John 21:15-16).
Rather than going fishing in order to earn his living, the Lord Jesus told Peter to feed His lambs, and to feed His sheep. Peter would spend the rest of his life doing this, and it was far better than going fishing. Yes, it is good for us to work and to support ourselves in this world, and the Apostle Paul told the Thessalonians that “if any would not work, neither should he eat” (2 Thessalonians 3:10). We are not to be lazy Christians. However, to do the Lord’s work (if He has called us to it) is very important, and if we do the Lord’s work in His way, He will see to that we are looked after financially. He is a good Master to work for!
As far as we know, Peter never went back to fishing again, but rather used his time and energy to see souls saved, and to encourage believers. He had learned that when the Lord calls us to serve Him, we are not to turn back.
