“And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert” (Acts 8:26).

As I write this in February, 2024, the city of Gaza has been much in the news lately because of an awful war in that area over a murderous raid into Israel made by the Hamas group in October, 2023. But in the days of the early church it was a desert area, and Philip may have wondered why the Lord was sending him down there. If you read the earlier part of Acts 8, you will see that Philip had been preaching in Samaria, and many had been saved. But he went where the Lord told him to go, and found one man who was really searching for something to satisfy his soul. Philip was able to tell that man about the Lord Jesus.

It was not an easy trip for Philip to make, for it is over 100 km. (about 63 miles) from Jerusalem to Gaza. However, the Lord has His eye on individuals, as well as on crowds of people. That man was in earnest, and was ready to listen to Philip. If you are not saved, are you willing to listen to the gospel? God is interested in you too, and wants you to be saved.
