“Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil” (Proverbs 3:7).

It is easy to be wise in our own eyes, and there is quite a bit of this attitude out in the world today. Sometimes people who do not know very much are very quick to express their views on certain subjects, and it only displays their ignorance to those who really do understand that particular topic. This has been described as the Dunning-Kruger effect, where people with low ability overestimate their skills and ability in a particular area. In simple terms, they are ignorant of their own ignorance. It is easy for any of us to act like this, for we all like to appear intelligent, educated, and well-informed.

However, Solomon, who wrote the book of Proverbs, was one of the wisest men who ever lived. He recognized that we need the wisdom that only the Lord can give us, and that we need this wisdom in order to “depart from evil” that is in this world. It is important to be humble before the Lord, and to realize that usually we do not know as much as we think we do.
