“Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God” (2 Corinthians 7:1).
We saw yesterday that if we were willing to separate from unbelievers and this world, God would be a Father unto us. Of course, if we are truly saved, God is always our Father, for that is our relationship to Him in this time of His grace. However, we cannot enjoy that relationship if we allow sin in our thoughts or in our actions.
For this reason, our verse today tells us to “cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh [the body] and spirit [our thoughts].” What we think about, and what we fill our minds with, ultimately controls our actions. If we are careful to judge those wrong thoughts and actions, and confess them to the Lord as sin, then we will enjoy our relationship with God as our Father. Is it worth it? Indeed it is!
