When Johnw had first preached before his coming the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.

Matt. 3:1‑11• ¹In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judea,
²And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
³For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
⁴And the same John had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey.
⁵Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judea, and all the region round about Jordan,
⁶And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.
⁷But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
⁸Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:
⁹And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.
¹⁰And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
¹¹I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: (Matt. 3:1‑11)

¹³And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you.
¹⁴And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.
¹⁵And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not;
¹⁶John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:
¹⁷Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.

⁷The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.
⁸He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.

²⁶And they came unto John, and said unto him, Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond Jordan, to whom thou barest witness, behold, the same baptizeth, and all men come to him.
²⁷John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven.
²⁸Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him.
²⁹He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom's voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled.
³⁰He must increase, but I must decrease.
³¹He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth: he that cometh from heaven is above all.
³²And what he hath seen and heard, that he testifieth; and no man receiveth his testimony.
³³He that hath received his testimony hath set to his seal that God is true.
³⁴For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.
³⁵The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand.
³⁶He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him. (John 3:25‑36)

John 5:33‑36• ³³Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth.
³⁴But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved.
³⁵He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.
³⁶But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me. (John 5:33‑36)

• And as all took John for a prophet, so did our Lord bear witness to him as more than a prophet, Jehovah's messenger before Messiah's face to prepare the way before Him, as Isaiah and Malachi previously intimated. (“Acts 13:13-31” by W. Kelly)
