The first clause of 2 is connected singularly by the Revisers with verse 1: "out of the throne of God and of the Lamb, in the midst of the street thereof." Of course it is possible grammatically; and, if allowed, it would strengthen De Wette’s severance of "of the river" from "in the midst" and the connection of it only with "on this side and on that side. " But it seems a strange and poor conclusion to the grand picture of the river of life proceeding out of the throne. That no version is known to us generally as favorable to such a construction is serious, when one considers the responsibility of a revision intended for ordinary use, and not merely what an individual or two might suggest to students.
